#1: Turkey

The turkey is considered to be the most important aspect of a Christmas meal, as 87% of the UK believe that Christmas is not complete without a traditional roast turkey being served at the table. Turkey is often roasted and served with stuffing, to create the most satisfying flavour.

Turkeys were introduced to Britain more than 500 years ago by Yorkshireman William Strickland, who found 6 turkeys from American Indian traders on his travels. The tradition of eating turkey on Christmas Day originated in England, where Henry VIII was the first English King to enjoy the turkey in the 16th century, which made it fashionable to eat at Christmas. Previous to this, geese, boars' head and even peacocks were served at a Christmas meal.
